What is Sexual Harassment?

Sexual harassment in the workplace is a serious matter. It involves unwelcome sexual conducts and can happen between people of different sexes, or those of same sex.

Sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual attention that occurs in the workplace in particular, or in an educational setting. It includes a range of behavior from mild transgressions and annoyances to serious abuses, which can even involve forced sexual activity. It can be verbal, non-verbal, or physical. Sexual harassment is a form of abuse, both sexual and psychological.  It creates a hostile and intimidating environment. It interferes with the victim’s performance. It is psychologically traumatic especially when acceptance of the harasser’s behaviour is made a condition for employment, promotion, or academic achievement.

Sexual harassment is wrong, immoral, and illegal.  No one has the right to force you into any situation you are not comfortable with. Say ‘no’ to it. No one deserves to be sexually harassed.
It must be stopped. Say ‘no’ to it. Resist and report all forms of harassment. Take charge for your life!

HARASSMENT? STOP THE ACT.

Are you being harassed? Do you know any victim of sexual harassment?  Do you actually understand those words, 'sexual harassment'?

Most times when people hear the words "sexual harassment," they picture a male supervisor cornering a female employee to make unwanted sexual advances. While the above scenario is real, ‘sexual harassment’ goes far beyond that. Although most reported cases of sexual harassment involve males harassing females, employees and employers as well need to know these facts:
·        Anyone, irrespective of gender could become a victim or a harasser.
·         Same gender harassment is on the increase.
·        Your ‘innocent’ actions and jokes could constitute sexual harassment if someone finds them unwanted and/or threatening.
·        Any form of sexual conduct in the workplace is inappropriate.
·        Sexual harassment is both legally and morally wrong.
·        The management has a great role to play in creating a harassment-free work environment.

Irrespective of the gender/position of the harasser or that he victim, sexual harassment is dehumanizing.
The individual has a duty to put some preventive measures in place , and if /when harassed,  report to the appropriate authority.

This blog  is aimed fighting harassment by empowering the employee  (male or female) against the menace, and enlightening management on the effects of harassment on the workforce, and proffering practical solutions to the recurrent cases of  harassment.

Sexual harassment is a dehumanizing acts. Stop it NOW!

                                                                     STOP IT!
